Orvis Pro Insulated Hoodie
By Greg Thomas

If you attended the Orvis Guide Rendezvous in Missoula, Montana back in April, you would clearly know which hoodie/jacket was the one to have—sometimes it seemed like a third of the crowd was decked out in the Orvis Pro Insulated Hoodie.

I secured one of these last fall and rolled through the cold season feeling pretty comfy, whether dealing with heavy wind or rain, sleet and snow. Be warned, however, this is not a completely waterproof piece. But its Ripstop nylon outer layer does shed water and the inside offers PrimaLoft insulation in key areas, meaning the head, arms and core.

You may wonder why we’re talking about an insulated hoodie as summer ramps up, but you know what it’s like to fish on cool mornings and evenings, or to sit around a campfire after dark, or to hike into a high mountain lake in the West, or to sit out a thunderstorm in the rain and hail. You’ll need insulation, and this hoodie provides that. Carry it on a boat or in your pack and keep a true waterproof shell handy—you’ve got it made even in an extended downpour.

The Pro hoodie has two zippered fleece-lined hand warmer pockets and an internal zippered security pocket that the jacket rolls into for efficient packing. Maybe best, the Pro hoodie is really comfortable, offering what Orvis calls an “athletic” fit. Get this jacket and you’ve got a piece that works hard during three seasons and fills in nicely when you need that extra insulation during serious summer excursions. $249
