Twelve new months is what January serves, a full year to achieve some of your greatest fly-fishing dreams. It could be a remote brook trout adventure high up in the Canadian Rockies, or an opportunity to finally experience one of Alaska’s most amazing fishing situations, when meaty leopard rainbows, Dolly varden and lake trout mop up on helpless salmon smolt. Or maybe it’s taking advantage of something new, like the developing striped bass fishery centered on Nova Scotia’s Miramichi, where 30 fish days are pretty much the rule. There’s the salt, too, where the winter season allows you to specifically target double-digit bones. Or maybe this is the year to never let another ‘cuda pass by—unmolested that is. Pick up that rod with the green machine tied to the bite tippet and watch your line disappear faster than ever. Get your first taste of those thrills in FFI’s January edition.

Much of the world has come out of hiberation and all of us “two-dose” recipients are feeling happy and safe and are trying to make up for a lost year. Unfortunately, we’re all shooting for the same thing at the same time—build the new home, take the family camping, fly fish the waters we’ve always dreamed of. Live more. Work less … more
We’ve got the bug just like you’ve got the bug and no matter what it is or where it swims, we want to catch it and share our adventures with you. Because, that’s what it comes down to, right? A reason to travel and fish, and the opportunity to share those adventures with friends and family. Our motto at FFI is, wake, eat, fish, sleep. Rinse and repeat.

Seattle To Montana Trout In Eight Hours
![]() It doesn’t take long to get from Seattle to Montana. Fortuitously, some of the best early season dry-fly fishing on earth occurs in the far western portion of the state, in and around Missoula, a trout addicted town surrounded by five blue-ribbon rivers and what seems like 500 quality brew pubs. Want to fish the ... |
Take, After Take, After Take
![]() We knew something was up as my fishing partner and I drove along an increasingly snow-covered road to Peterhope Lake on a mid-November day. Not a tire track and certainly no evidence of anyone recently launching a boat. Then, why you might ask, would anyone want to fish with a good eight inches of snow on the ... |
Life. Death. And Permit.
![]() It had been a long tough week on the flats. Back-to-back cold fronts replete with a savage easterly wind had churned the crystal waters of Cayo Cruz into a milky soup. Overhead, the towering thunderheads had crowded out the sun, further conspiring to make sight-fishing all but impossible. All week my guide Raffa and ... |
Tips For Euro Pike
![]() As an author, traveler and professional fly-fishing guide, I had to cancel most of my 2020 projects, with only a curtailed guide season in Iceland surviving the global lockdown. But out of adversity comes opportunity—per ardua ad astra, as the Romans used to say. I’d spent most of the first two months of the ... |
Golden Hour in The Canadian Rockies
![]() The Canadian Rockies are one of the most pristine pieces of wilderness on earth. Home to breathtaking views, charismatic mega-fauna, and world-class fisheries, it is really tough to beat the biodiversity and raw beauty found in this part of the world. With golden light beaming through the changing ... |
Winter Off Key West
![]() These days, there isn’t a fish that you can’t catch on a fly rod: some are just harder to manage than others. King mackerel fall into the “very hard” category despite ranging throughout the Gulf of Mexico and way up the Atlantic coast, even over to the Bahamas. They are everywhere sometimes, and other times, especially if ... |
Xcalak
![]() The dogs came out to greet us. Joey first, a slightly lowered, mellowed down look-alike of General George Patton’s beloved English bull terrier, Willie; then came Bombi, another hometown blend with strong visual leanings toward a treeing walker coon hound. Both had been sleeping in the palapa but now needed to ... |
Going For the Grand Slam
![]() Most saltwater fly-fishers have caught bonefish. Some have tamed the mighty silver king. And these days, with advances in tackle and tactics, a lot of people are even catching permit on the fly. But how many can claim they’ve caught all three on the fly, in a day, and are recognized by the IGFA as a flats grand slam ... |
